As a part of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of trained operators, technicians, and electronics experts, being nonprofit and non commercial, is by its very nature, oriented to preparedness. Plus the fact that I've listened to short and medium wave frequencies all my life, this page will be dedicated to materials of a different nature. Read with a grain of salt.

ICOM IC-728 is an entry level transceiver, but it's what I use. 12 voltsDC powers it and will put 100 watts out, into a dipole wire antenna up about 30ft. I like to operate CW (Morse code) for the fun of it and voice on rare occasion.
On the radio I'm KB9GLD, class- extra.
The thing about international Morse code is that it's in English, and every body who uses it has to know English, and maybe that seems somewhat unfair, but I can understand all who I talk to. It's the original digital code.
Who I talk to depends on propagation, which is affected by space weather and geomagnetic conditions. Really! lol. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Even though Field Day is on June 25-26-2011, my friends and I always like to take a radio (transceiver) and throw a wire up in the trees when we're camping or out in the country and see where in the world we can go. Field Day is a weekend of contesting to practice emergency preparedness and networking communications among hams all around the states. But we do the very same thing just for fun.
